* Stray Doggy *

When I went to Bulgaria, I was struck by the number of stray dogs on the streets, even in the capital, Sofia. I looked at the abandoned animals and would try and think of something to throw their way - a piece of bread, anything - to appease their suffering if only for a second. On one occasion, at least, I went to the local version of a Price's Chopper (BILLA) to purchase sausages and I then distributed them to all the strays that I had seen on my way there, retracing my steps as not to miss a single one... The next time I travelled there, the joke was that all the stray doggies would be there awaiting me at the airport, in anticipation...

If I lived there, I would do this on a regular basis - considering the fact that, in my North American eyes, the prices there truly are chopped quite considerably... But, above all, I could not just walk by all these dogs, some of them so skinny (literally just skin on the bones) and not do anything at all, day in and day out. I simply would not be able to.  I figure that, once established in Bulgaria, I would set up a group that would just that - patrol the streets and feed those dogs. Maybe such a group already exists - I simply do not know of it yet... If it does exist already, all I can tell them is: please continue doing what you are doing there.

The stray dog problem has been a long-term dilemma for the authorities there: such a situation also exists elsewhere in Europe, but in Sofia, it appears to be the lack of willingness of devoting any time, effort or resources to possible solutions to this problem that truly plagues the capital - and country overall. The political situation in Bulgaria is well-known and I shall not go into details about it here - but, suffice it to say that, if there had been more capable elected officials, at all levels of government there, in the last two decades, this and many other problems would be at the very least being dealt with on a day-to-day basis already. There might be shelters for these animals - hopefully decent places where they would not be put down but rather treated and groomed for possible adoption, perhaps out of town, where guard dogs are still appreciated.  Alas, as it stands, the stray problematic remains one such without a foreseeable solution. Worse yet - now, some execrable, pathetic excuses for human beings are mistreating the animals. One such heinous act was reported on social media everywhere - and we thought we'd share this right here too, for all who happen to stop by here to read about it; either once again or for the first time ever...

UPDATE ON SPIRIT, 16.07.12 - Our little hero has been admitted to the Central Veterinary Clinic at Sofia City. Blood and urine tests have been done. The results reveal that Spirit has anameia and his kidney's function is slightly compromised. His wounds have been treated and he has been stabilized. He was put on a drip wit
h several antibiotics and strong pankillers. In a week or so his vet will have to decide if an operation on his burnt skin will be necessary. For now, Spirits wounds are treated 8 times a day and he is fighting hard for his life. I am asking you kindly again to please donate for Spirit as much as you possibly can. The dog's treatment is expensive, he has to be on the best pain management and may have to be operated on. All that may amount easily to couple of thousands BGN, but we will know for sure in a few days. BANК ACCOUNT DETAILS: IN LEVA : Iban: BG31FINV91501015033370 BIC: FINVBGSF Iva Mladenova Cherneva PAYPAL: withlovetoanimals@gmail.com Or you could donate cash at the"Central Vet Clinic"-Sofia On behalf of Spirit, thank you! ____________________________ BULGARIA'S WALL OF SHAME! STRAY DOG-VICTIM OF ACID ATTACK HEARTFELT APPEAL! EN & BG This atrocity happened a couple of days ago in a provincial town of Bulgaria. A friendly stray dog, who was an easy target got burnt with acid! The wounds are potentially life-threatening and cover all of the right side of his body. The pain must be unbearable! The poor dog was taken from the streets by a local activist and received some basic medical help, but we were told that there is no vet clinic at his home town to admit him to. So, our dedicated animal rescue team Cvety & Iva from Animal Help Stara Zagora - Cvety & Iva jumped on their car and started the rescue operation: they drove to Dimitrovgrad to collect the dog and now, that he is with them, they are on their way to the Central Veterinary Clinic in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. That's about 490 km drive (both ways), during the night! I spoke to Cvety on the phone. She told me that the dog is adequate but clearly in pain and clearly needs urgent and expert medical attention, which is only available during the weekend nights at the Central Vet. Clinic in Sofia. Naturally, they decided to go there. Tomorrow, we will publish new photos and doctor's prognosis, regarding treatment and recovery. We also must chose a name for our new rescue and may be some of you would like to help with suggestions. The animal will need financial help. I am publishing Cvety & Iva's Paypal and please, donate what you can, every bit counts! As for the monster, who poured the acid onto an innocent dog, at this stage we know absolutely nothing about him/they. But, we will speak to our colleagues from Dimitrovgrad about find out who he might be and pressing charges. Please, help us help this poor dog -victim of unimaginable cruelty donating to PayPal: withlovetoanimals@gmail.com and SHARE THIS APPEAL! THANK YOU! __________________________ БЪЛГАРСКАТА СТЕНА НА ПОЗОРА!
We must help stop this - so that this remains only an isolated case. We must defend the defenceless.

No more inhumane acts. No more unnecessary suffering. No more unspeakable acts. No more.

BG Jokes!

As found on the Facebook page "Снимки от почитатели на ВИЦОВЕ, МИСЛИ И КРИЛАТИ ФРАЗИ - НЕКА ДА СЕ СМЕЕМ ПОСТОЯННО С ГЛАС!"

Bulgarian humor is delightful as it is very self-ironizing and wittier than most others out there. It can be found to be as self-denigrating as Woody Allen, as whimsical as George Carlin used to be in his non-sacrilegious material, and as current and factual as the Smothers Brothers were, too! Truly, you get a little bit of everything with BG jokes...! Here are some samples...

July Morning

July morning in Bulgaria has become a festival embued with a very special atmosphere with this awesome rock anthem from Uriah Heep, a band born in London but forever linked to Bulgaria - as many of us born elsewhere are, too!

Meeting on the Black Sea coast for a senses-shattering July morning is the epitomy of national pride for all Bulgarians - born or naturalized! ;-)

How I wish I was there, in beautiful Bulgaria, this July Morning...! <3

"Времето е в нас и ние сме във времето."

Vasil Levski
and
Christo (Xristo) Botev

The former died first - the Lion-hearted one, the self-sacrificial hero, the devotion incarnate to the Cause...! His true name is not ''Levski'' - this is his nickname, originating from the word ''lev'' which means in ancient Bulgarian... lion! He had earned the nickname when he leapt over a wide trench with the agility and ferociousness of the beast deemed to be king, in his desperate fight against the Turks who would not give up their unlawful dominion over lands that did not belong to them. They invaded and kept Bulgaria and other territories under oppression for centuries - until, finally, men such as Vasil Levski rose crying out for freedom. It would indeed be freedom or death for them - the latter for the majority of the original wave of liberation forces that tried to free their country from the oppressor.

The latter would perish later trying to accomplish the exact same thing: Botev was the poet extraordinaire who identified himself chiefly as a reporter, actually - one that tried desperately to awaken his people to said Cause - to no avail. For many were fearful of reprisal if the action failed - and most thought it had no chance of doing anything else but fail. Fed up of the inertia of the majority, Christo Botev assembled a party of revolutionaries and, as in Sparta, led his few hundreds (200, not 300) to battle - and they all perished before achieving the goal, too. Neither he nor Levski would live to see the results of the movement that they had initiated - but results it would yield indeed, one day.  For where they fell, others rose...

These are the true revolutionaries that others have merely followed the footsteps and examples of - sometimes unknowingly even. For, outside of their native Bulgaria and the Balkans, their tragic fates have rarely been retold - or praised, as they should.

At long last, these days, there are other retellings of the extraordinary courage of these two, elsewhere on the web, in the heroes' own language too. There is even a non-lucrative organization and website dedicated to the memory of the former; a well-deserved honor that serves a dual purpose as it perpetrates the legend as also inspires the same bravery in others today. For, nowadays, we are encountering frighteningly similar situations more and more - only the names and exact circumstances differ.

There can only be proportional levels of bravery and courage these days, of course - however, the oppression, the turmoil and the strife that can be encountered now and in the future, though overall widely different from what Levski and Botev encountered in the late 1800s, can still be quite the testing experience for the human spirit. And quite the threat to liberty in any definition that it can be given.

Just as Sergei Nechayev's writings influenced numerous radicals and would-be revolutionaries in later years (such as the 1969 Black Panthers or the Red Brigade of Italia) the traces left by Levski and Botev have resounded and reverberated throughout time and space and their markings are recognized in many luminaries far more famous than they are: from Anonymous to Che Guevara.

And it is with pride and reverence that we, the editing crew behind Bulgarian Dreams and its many sister sites and brother blogs throughout the TLB Prime Network take this time and space to promulgate the example, resilience and nobility of these two great heroes - in English, so that more people outside of their native land can discover them and admire their courage before adversity.

They never backed down, never gave up their dream, even as it appeared certain never to succeed, never to come true...

May we all be so unyielding, even as the enemy is all about us, ready and apt to strike us down!

ТРЕТИ МАРТ 1878

One of the most significant days of the year is being celebrated today, in Bulgaria and throughout the world - wherever there is or may be a Bulgarian presence, that is! And Google remembered...!

it is not surprising, of course, as Google always honors the best and the brightest - on any given special day of the year - and this is an exclusive of Google.bg (in other words, don't expect to find it on google.ca or google.whateverelse!)

Above here we have the perfect, for perfectly phonetic, representation of the word (okay, name...) "google" - in Slavonic alphabet, in Cyrillic really - in Bulgarian. Five sounds - five letters! It doesn't get any more efficient than this...!

But though fascinating this is, this is not the order of the day: the Bulgarian Holiday is. The Third of March - a true "Great Victory" took place on this date. The "officialisation" of that Victory, of the Liberation, was signed, sealed and delivered that day - making all the previous sacrifices, all the suffering, all the battles worthwhile. Oftentimes, such holidays imposed by the state merely purport to be a just cause for celebration, since it is a "great victory" only in the eyes of the state and of its agents, since all it really is is means to further their ideology and agenda.

It is definitely not the case here.

This is a true reason to celebrate, to commemorate, to remember in joyous as in mournful reverence - as today, those many years ago, a True Great Victory was achieved when Bulgarians finally achieved their dream of Liberation from their Turkish oppressors. They achieved it at a high cost - so many died in order to achieve this: Levski and Botev being but two who gave their lives. But their sacrifice was not in vain. Liberation was a FACT, finally, on this day back in 1878.

Freedom is therefore celebrated today - and that makes the Third of March a holiday for all of us, everywhere in this world: every single one of us who loves freedom, believes in eradicating all forms of oppression and vies for the ultimate Liberation; we all have cause for celebration today.

So... Happy Third of March to all!
